Plant Something Unique!
At Forest's Edge Garden, we feel that it is important to protect our native plants and the environment as a whole. As such, we do not offer for sale any plants recognized as invasive species by the state of Maine. Toward that end, we offer the following list of invasive species to avoid and a native replacement. The list comes from Maine Garden Club's NER project.
Invasive Species You Shouldn't Plant:
Japanese Barberry, Berberis thunbergii vs.
Autumn Olive, Elaeagnus umbellate
Burning Bush, Euonymus alatus
Bittersweet, Celastrus orbiculata
Japanese Knotweed, Fallopian japonica
Also known as Bamboo.
Multiflora rose, Rosa multiflora
Purple Loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria
Illegal to seed, transplant. propagate!!
Japanese Honeysuckle, Lonicera japonica
Rugosa Rose and ANY of it's hybrids
Native Replacements:
Winterberry, Ilex verticillata
American Elder, Sambucus canadensis
Highbush Blueberry, V. corymbosum
Winterberry, for decorative purposes.
Snakeroot, Cimicifuga racemoa
Choke Cherry, Prunus virginiana
Joe-pye weed, Eupatorium dubium
Pagoda Dogwood, Cornus alternifolia
Carolina Rose
